23/01/1281: Born in Sacros. His mother, Maria Estrella Delgado, is a maid in the palace and a mistress of King Ferdinand.

03/02/1281: Mother dies of the Plague. King blames Luca for causing his mother’s death and is enraged.

04/02/1281-15/04/1281: Mother’s friend, Soccoro, helps smuggle Luca out of the castle to Maria Estrella’s cousin, Carlos Puga. He in turn takes baby Luca to live with Estrella’s brother Marco. Marco’s family lives on Islagaard, but Marco spends most of his time aboard the El Cisne Negro.

1283-1294 (2 to 13 years old): (Son of a Gun, Boy, Lead to Outcast) Spent most of this time living aboard “El Cisne Negro” (The Black Swan) with his Uncle Marco, though also spent time at his uncle’s family’s home in Islagaard with his Aunt Candela, and his cousins and other extended family. The story told to others was that his parents and siblings had all died of the plague which had swept through their village. Somehow Luca had miraculously survived and been taken to the local temple, his cries heard from the boarded up house. Later the temple had looked at census records and discovered his relation to Marco, and sent word to him.

Luca had grown up being told this story, thus believing all his immediate family was dead. He was told that his parents were Roque Delgado and his wife Dana (nee Ortega), who had indeed died of the plague about the same time as his mother, in a village a few days ride from Sacros. Roque was in fact Maria and Marco’s brother, the second born in their family of five siblings.

It was only when Luca was turned twelve that he confided in Luca the truth of his parents, of his mother’s affair with the king, of his subsequent rage when his mother had died, and of his being smuggled to be with his uncle.

“Your father, the king, must have felt strongly for your mother to have been so enraged by her death. Perhaps you can take some comfort in that Luca. But he was so enraged that Soccoro, your mother’s friend, feared for your safety. Somehow he thought you had caused her death, which of course is nonsense. It was the plague that took her. So Soccoro slipped you out of the palace grounds by night… who knows how she managed to get past the palace guard.. and took you to our cousin, and your uncle, Carlos, who in turn brought you to Paccara. It was there that I met him and brought you back here to Islagaard.

There were fires in Paccara as we sailed away to the south. They were burning the homes of plague victims, hoping to stop the pestilence from spreading. Luddite zealots were walking the streets, preaching the plague was a judgement from their damned god Ehowa. A punishment for our lack of belief, our lack of submission to their sky fairy. And people throughout the city were converting. They’d try anything in their fear to protect themselves. Others chased them out to the city limits, or threw vegetables, and then rocks at them, or tossed them out into harbour. Some just had their throats slit.

My crew would not even dare leave the ship. Our cargo was left aboard. There was no one working the docks to unload it. But Carlos had been waiting with you in the city. He knew I was due to port sometime in Luna de Heno. He waited in that plague ridden city for over three weeks for El Cisne Negro to sail into the harbour. He’d paid someone to watch out for us. And so you were only two moons old when I first laid my eyes on you. You’re lucky we’d even weighed anchor. The crew had wanted to turn round as soon as they’d seen the plague flags flying, but I’d said that with the plague in town, there’d be need for the supplies on board. As it turns out they never got them. I had thought to try unloading what we could without the dock workers’ help, but when Carlos brought you to me, I relented and we left as soon we could.

Carlos would not come with us. He had his own wife and family to return to, in Sacros. He’d worked as blacksmith there. I later heard from his wife that he died from the plague a few weeks after returning to them. A brave man, a worthy cousin."

Sometime in 1294 (13 years old): After an altercation with one of the sailors on El Cisne Negro, jumps ship in Paccara, and begins a life of crime.

1294-1297 (13 to 16 years old): (Desperate Killer)

1297-1301 (16 to 20 years old): (Smuggler)

1301-1307 (20 to 26 years old): (Whoremonger)
